Be creative in as many ways you can outside of work.

In her own words

For money, I direct art. It’s great fun. I love producing something that people talk about. It’s a rush to know that your idea affects others.
However, those opportunities are less frequent when a whole production is involved.
So… I write a blog, humansarefunny.com. I also do stand-up around LA. Instant satisfaction is awesome. Instant DISsatisfaction— not awesome. It’s actually pretty uncomfortable from an entire audience, so I try to keep the dissatisfaction to the meetings at work.

Words of advice

1. Be creative in as many ways you can outside of work. Don’t stop painting or writing or whatever just because you now have a job. One day, you’ll be sick of work creativity and you’ll be so glad you’ve still got other things going on.
2. Rock that femininity. A lot of us (me included) tend to jock ourselves up to be more masculine at work. I think subconsciously we think more people will take us seriously. Not true. Skirts and heels can be very intimidating.
3. Learn to love the rejection. It’s hard. You’re putting your best ideas out there and often they’re met with harsh words. Just remember that those words will really help you in the long run. You’ll get so used to rejection that it will become easier and easier to put ideas out there. You’ll end up taking more risks and making more moves.
4. Help everyone who asks for it.
5. Know when to get out of the business. Like, right now. See ya.
