Get a job assisting (or even interning or apprenticing) for someone that you admire.
In her own words
I am a photographer living in Chicago and loving it! In 2008, I graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BFA in photography. Since then, I’ve been working as a studio manager and assistant to renowned architectural and canine photographer Barbara Karant. My personal work focuses mainly on architecture and the documentation of Chicago, with an eye toward the history of the city. After a hiatus, I am recently getting back into photographing people. I have also fallen in love with “iphoneography.”
Words of Advice
The biggest piece of advice I could give at this point in my career is that getting a job assisting (or even interning or apprenticing) for someone that you admire can be a hugely valuable experience. I’ve learned so much from just being in a studio and seeing how everything works. I also had the opportunity to assist Barbara with the creation of her new book Small Dog Big Dog, which was just released by Simon&Schuster. I worked closely with her at every stage of production and learned more during the year and a half spent making this book than I did in several of my classes combined.

“Chicago via Chicago Avenue.” Documenting old buildings, bricks, peeling paint, quirky architectural details, odd signage + colorful walls.

“Above the Clouds.” Iphoneography. My iphone shots show up regularly on chicagoist.com + just received a 2010 IPPA Awards Honorable Mention.

“Mom in Michigan.” This image is from my newest project, a series of environmental portraits tentatively entitled, “People in Places.”
