I think when we insert our point of view, we spur conversations and truly have an opportunity to instigate change.

In her own words

I am always interested in design work related to social change, environment concerns, or contemporary art. Currently I’m doing contracted and volunteer design work for the Chicago Nature Museum and assisting the art collective Temporary Services with some of their publications. I hope to take on more illustration over the next year.

Words of advice

For me, it’s important to recognize the opportunity design gives me to speak with the public in a legitimate way. But, it’s also important to for me to have fun and insert poetic pranks into my work.

A few years ago, I made an edible poster for a design conference focusing on world hunger. I was struggling with the pressure to make something “trendy” when I knew the poster wasn’t going to help change the situation for the 90% of the population that is impoverished. In the end, I opted to create a poster that questioned our role as designers. The poster was unique, had whimsical illustrations, spoke to the attendees, and, surprisingly, it won the student competition. Since then I’ve tried to remain true to my voice and to think deeply about my solutions instead of simply following the trends.
